TED-2300 Introduction to Special Education Credits 3 This course is an introduction to the field of special education. The course covers the education of exceptional students: Historical, philosophical, educational, and legal issues, and current practices in assessment, diagnosis, and teaching. Prerequisite(s): Reading Readiness Corequisite(s): TED-2301 completed or concurrent Formerly (EDU 2030) Course Outcomes
- Explain the progression of the field of special education and the laws and legislation which govern the field.
- Discuss the components of current special education laws/legislation and the implications for classroom practice.
- Describe the process for determining student eligibility for special education services.
- Identify the roles of various professionals in the provision of services to students with special needs.
- Discuss appropriate Individualized Education Program (IEP) creation and implementation strategies.
- List the characteristics of each type of exceptionality, as well as the causes, identification tools, and the impact on developmental growth.
- Identify appropriate teaching strategies and guidance techniques to use with exceptional children in an included general education classroom, and other educational settings.
- Recommend types of appropriate support services for exceptional children and their families.
- Make appropriate modifications and accommodations for students with special needs.
