TED-2300 Introduction to Special Education

This course is an introduction to the field of special education. The course covers the education of exceptional students: Historical, philosophical, educational, and legal issues, and current practices in assessment, diagnosis, and teaching. 
Prerequisite(s): Reading Readiness  
Corequisite(s): TED-2301  completed or concurrent

Course Outcomes
 

  1. Explain the progression of the field of special education and the laws and legislation which govern the field.
  2. Discuss the components of current special education laws/legislation and the implications for classroom practice.
  3. Describe the process for determining student eligibility for special education services.
  4. Identify the roles of various professionals in the provision of services to students with special needs.
  5. Discuss appropriate Individualized Education Program (IEP) creation and implementation strategies.
  6. List the characteristics of each type of exceptionality, as well as the causes, identification tools, and the impact on developmental growth. 
  7. Identify appropriate teaching strategies and guidance techniques to use with exceptional children in an included general education classroom, and other educational settings.
  8. Recommend types of appropriate support services for exceptional children and their families.
  9. Make appropriate modifications and accommodations for students with special needs.
