ARB-1000 Arabic for Beginners Credits 3 ARB 1000 is a course designed for students who are true beginners without any background knowledge of Arabic (classical or colloquial). It focuses on emerging language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are introduced to Modern Standard Arabic, which is the language used for reading and writing Arabic today. Students learn basic grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, and writing of the Arabic alphabet in order to produce basic sentences. Some conversational Arabic and cultural topics are included. 3 class/1 lab hour or equivalent. Course Outcomes 1. Initiate simple statements by using basic vocabulary and sentence patterns in Arabic.
2. Utilize basic vocabulary and sentence patterns in Arabic to reply to simple statements.
3. Read simple sentences in beginning Arabic for comprehension.
4. Recall fundamentals of Arabic grammar.
5. Write simple sentences in Arabic, using harakat, the Arabic voweling system.
6. Utilize fundamental colloquial phrases in Arabic.
7. Identify the various Arabic-speaking cultures in the Middle East.
