BIO-2500 Biological Principles of Forensic Science


Credits 4
An introduction to the principles governing the application of biology and biological statistics that are used to analyze evidence from crime scenes. Topics will include evidence examination and preservation; presumptive and confirmatory biological testing; blood, urine, semen, hair and fiber comparisons; generation and statistical analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA profiles; understanding the modern forensic crime laboratory; the role of the forensic scientist within the Criminal and Civil United States Court system.
Prerequisite(s): BIO-1140   and CHM-1010  .
3 class/3 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
  1. Describe how to identify and sample biological evidence for serology and DNA analysis.
  2. Demonstrate the laboratory techniques for conducting confirmatory testing of serological and DNA samples.
  3. Explain the scientific principles behind serological and DNA analytical techniques.
  4. Explain how forensic evidence within the biological science is presented in a court of law
