CJT-1520 Police Operations

An exploration of the field of law enforcement, to include the duties, authority, responsibilities, and rights of the uniformed police officer. Emphasis is placed upon the function of patrol officers as it relates to the foundations of policing in America.
Prerequisite(s): Reading proficiency.
Course Outcomes
  1. Describe the history and foundations of policing in the United States, to include local, state, federal, and private law enforcement agencies.
  2. Explain the work police officers do, including patrol, peacekeeping, investigations, and community policing.
  3. Describe the legal aspects of police work.
  4. Explain the challenges involved in police work, including discretions, ethics, professionalism, and the use of force.
