EMT-1000 Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Theory Credits 6 Prepares student in basic medical pre-hospital emergency care, following the standards and guidelines set by the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS), the accrediting agency for EMT programs in Maryland. Lecture topics include anatomy and physiology of the chest, abdomen, and head; patient assessment; basic life support, trauma and medical emergencies; immobilization techniques; and childbirth. Lab sessions focus on skill mastery in caring for these patients, including the continued development of critical thinking skills and the development and implementation of treat plans for patients with various disease and traumatic states encountered in the pre-hospital environment. Continued attention is given to preparation for a role as an EMT team leader, patient advocate, and for entry-level practice as an Emergency Medical Technician professional in the pre-hospital environment. Corequisite(s): EMT-1100 . 4 class/4 lab hours. Note: Must be 18 years of age or older; successfully pass the Reading Comprehension Placement Test at Prince George’s Community College with a 79 or higher; possess a current CPR certification (which must remain valid throughout the course). The state requires that a petitioner for the paramedic program have a current, valid EMT license and a minimum of 1 year experience as an EMT. Course Outcomes
- Identify the components of an Emergency Medical Services system (EMS).
- Identify elements of general anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and medical terminology, as they relate to patient assessment and management.
- Identify components of emergency scene information and assessment findings that guide emergency management.
- Identify the appropriate medications and their dosages with which the EMT may assist administration of and/or administer during an emergency.
- Identify components of appropriate basic emergency care, and the associated criteria for appropriate transportation, based on assessment findings, for the acutely ill or injured patient.
- Identify the operational roles and responsibilities of the EMT to ensure patient, public, and personnel safety.
