EGL-1040 Media Writing

History of mass media; study and writing of news articles, editorials, columns, reviews, and radio and TV scripts.
Prerequisite(s): EGL-1010  with grade of C or higher or permission of instructor.
Course Outcomes
  1. Write various types of media articles including straight news, feature stories, opinion/editorial, and press releases for print and electronic publication.
  2. Demonstrate clear, concise copywriting and editing skills including correct use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, appropriate style for subject, media, and audience, and ability to use a standard journalism style manual.
  3. Demonstrate ability to obtain information through interviews, research, print and online sources, fact checking, and other means of verification to produce accurate reporting with correct use and attribution of sources in accordance with ethical journalistic practices.
  4. Explain the context in which modern media operate, including historical, legal, and ethical considerations that govern the press in the United States and abroad.
