EGL-2050 American Literature from the Beginnings to the Late 19th Century Credits 3 A survey of American literature from the colonial period to the Civil War and its social and intellectual background. Prerequisite(s): EGL-1020 , EGL-1100 , EGL-1320 , or EGL-1340 . (Not offered summer.)
Course Outcomes
- Identify major authors and examine works of the period from 1608-1880, applying literary terms and concepts.
- Analyze important literary movements, and place specific works in their contexts.
- Explain how American literature reflects religious, economic, and political forces.
- Explain how American literature reflects basic themes in American cultural history.
- Apply at least one critical approach to reading and analyzing a text in an essay using documented sources.
