EGL-2050 American Literature from the Beginnings to the Late 19th Century

A survey of American literature from the colonial period to the Civil War and its social and intellectual background. 
Prerequisite(s): EGL-1020 , EGL-1100 , EGL-1320 , or EGL-1340 .
(Not offered summer.)

Course Outcomes
  1. Identify major authors and examine works of the period from 1608-1880, applying literary terms and concepts.
  2. Analyze important literary movements, and place specific works in their contexts.
  3. Explain how American literature reflects religious, economic, and political forces.
  4. Explain how American literature reflects basic themes in American cultural history.
  5. Apply at least one critical approach to reading and analyzing a text in an essay using documented sources.
