EGL-2410 Mythology, Legend, & Folklore

An overview of myth, legend, and folklore through the ages, tracing themes and motifs common to Western and other cultures and literatures. 
Prerequisite(s): EGL-1020 EGL-1100 EGL-1320 , or EGL-1340 .
(Not offered summer.)

Course Outcomes
  1. Explain the belief systems (creation stories, war epics, hero stories, etc.) and social constructs of various cultures within the Western world and among those cultures and selected cultures of the non-Western world such as Chinese, Indian, Native-American, and Babylonian.
  2. Explain the major mythological and folkloristic genres (epic, hymns, folk tale) and motifs of different peoples and the major theories of interpreting myth.
  3. Write analytically with adequate documentation about topics relevant to mythology, legend, and folklore. 
  4. Apply an interdisciplinary approach to mythology by using such scholarly theories as structuralism, etiological theory, etc.
