HIM-1530 Medical Terminology Credits 3 An introduction to the language of medicine through usage, pronunciation, spelling, and plural formation as they relate to body systems. Emphasis is on the study of word roots, prefixes, suffixes, eponyms, standard abbreviations, and medical case studies. The use of medical terms in context and terminology related to cancer medicine, nuclear medicine, and pharmacology. Course Outcomes
- Construct medical terms from word elements.
- Define medical terms using the “word analysis” approach.
- Use correct forms of word plurals, nouns, adjectives, verbs, and infinitives in constructing terms for various forms of communication.
- Correctly pronounce medical terms.
- Abbreviate medical terms according to industry standards.
- Compare/contrast the content of medical record documents.
- Report on diseases, operations, or related topics.
- Utilize dictionaries, formularies, and other references to spell, define, and pronounce medical terms.
- Utilize medical vocabulary in professional application situations, e.g., oral/written communications, in-service education, etc.
