HSM-2550 Understanding Hospitality Law Credits 3 This course provides an awareness of legal rights within the hospitality industry. The focus is on hotel and food service operations as business entities with responsibilities of managing day-to-day operations. The purpose is to explore the legal rights, duties, and responsibilities connecting guests, public, and employees. Students examine the possible consequences and legal ramifications when hospitality guests or providers are in breach of obligations, violate legally protected rights, or fail to satisfy legal obligations.
Course Outcomes
- Describe the rights and liabilities under the common law system for the hospitality industry.
- Examine how contract, tort, and negligence laws affect hospitality businesses.
- Analyze circumstances which allow an establishment to refuse accommodations or evict guests in the hospitality industry.
- Identify important federal laws covering staff and/or guests in the hospitality industry.
- Describe the obligations to protect the guests and the property in the hospitality industry.
- Identify restrictions typically placed on operations licensed to sell alcohol for consumption.
- Describe privacy, antitrust, copyright, and employee use issues as they relate to the Internet.
