PHY-1020 Introductory Physics II Credits 4 Fundamental concepts of vibration and sound, electricity and magnetism, optics, and modern physics. Prerequisite(s): PHY-1010 . 3 class/1 rec/2 lab hours. (Not offered summer.)
Course Outcomes
- Explain the terminology, symbols, dimensions, and units for physical quantities in sound, optics, electricity, magnetism, and modern physics.
- Use the concepts of oscillations, waves, sound and light waves, the Doppler effect, musical instruments to solve related problems.
- Apply the concepts the laws of refraction, reflection, interference, diffraction of light, to solve related problems (e.g., the power of prescription lens for various eye defects).
- Solve for the electric forces, fields, and potentials for various charge distributions.
- Solve for magnetic fields for a variety of sources (e.g., solenoid used for MRI).
- Explain the concepts related to the atomic and nuclear structures, radioactive decay, and probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics.
- Investigate the behavior of physical systems in the lab and report any discrepancy between the experimental behavior/results and the expected behavior/results.
