HIM-1500 Introduction to Health Information & Healthcare Systems Credits 4 An introduction to the health information departments, health care systems, and professional associations of the health information and informatics. Various aspects of information storage and retrieval systems, regulatory standards, the electronic health record, legal aspects, privacy requirements, and documentation requirements will also be examined. Students will also learn important skills that include presenting data as information, writing policies, and preparing professional reports. Prerequisite(s): Program admission, INT-1010 , BIO-2050 . Corequisite(s): HIM-1530 , BIO-2060 completed or concurrent. 3 class/3 lab hours. (Offered fall only.)
Course Outcomes
- Summarize the organizational structure of the health care delivery system.
- Identify the importance of ethical standards in the delivery of health care.
- Identify the basic content of the acute care health record.
- Analyze records for completeness and accuracy according to compliance standards, (e.g. CMS, TJC, etc.).
- Compare/contrast the regulations and standards for the release of medical information.
- List the systems, statutes, and policies governing record retention, archival processes, and information technology.
