HIM-1600 Principles & Applications of CPT


Credits 2
This course is designed to introduce the student to the HCPCS/CPT coding systems. Special emphasis is on the application of the ambulatory care environment and the physician’s office for data retrieval and reimbursement. 
Prerequisite(s): HIM 1580, HIM-1550  with grade of C or higher; or permission of HIM program director.
2 class/1 lab hours.
(Offered summer only.)

Course Outcomes
  1. Summarize the CMS Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
  2. Apply the principles of HCPCS/CPT to a given service or procedures.
  3. Distinguish between CPT coding for physician and hospital/facility reporting.
  4. Evaluate the accuracy of diagnostic and procedural coding.
