COM-2230 Intercultural Communication Credits 3 This course is the study of intercultural communication. It places intercultural and cross-cultural communication awareness as its central focus. The course is designed to help students develop and practice communication competence during intercultural and cross-cultural interactions. Prerequisite(s): COM-1010 , COM-1050 , COM-1090 , or COM-1110 with a grade of C or higher. Formerly SPH-2230 (Not offered summer)

Students passing this course will be able to:
- Explain intercultural and cross-cultural communication theories
- Explore cultural and cross-cultural dimensions in high and low-context cultures
- Examine identity management in cultural and cross-cultural settings
- Discuss the role of perception in intercultural and cross-cultural settings
- Identify similarities and differences in verbal and nonverbal communication and behaviors across cultures
- Critique assumptions, values, and beliefs, across cultures
- Examine barriers to cultural communication competence
