HIM-2520 Principles and Applications of ICD Coding II Credits 3 The course is a supervised student practice in a simulated laboratory and clinical practice settings; emphasis on inpatient and ambulatory coding with ICD and CPT/HCPCS coding systems using encoder and grouper software, data abstracting, and data retrieval from indices. Prerequisite(s): HIM-1540 , HIM-1550 , HIM-1580, HIM-1600 . Corequisite(s): HIM-2510 and HIM-2600 concurrent or permission of program director. (Offered fall only.)
Course Outcomes
- Apply medical coding guidelines and standards to inpatient and ambulatory diagnoses, procedures, and symptoms for data collection and processing according to departmental protocol.
- Apply medical codes for classification and reimbursement.
- Identify data elements and values for retrieving health information from databases.
- Prepare written reports according to coding guidelines and standards.
