HIM-2560 Health Information Practicum II


Credits 1
The course is a supervised student practice in a simulated laboratory and clinical practice settings; emphasis on inpatient and ambulatory coding with ICD and CPT/HCPCS coding systems using encoder and grouper software, data abstracting, and data retrieval from indices.
Prerequisite(s): HIM-1600  with grade of C or higher.
Corequisite(s): HIM-2511 , HIM-2520 , and HIM-2600  concurrent, or permission of program director.   
12 clinical hours.

Course Outcomes
  1. Code inpatient and ambulatory diagnoses, procedures, and symptoms for data collection and processing according to departmental protocol.
  2. Abstract records per established protocols, e.g., HSCRC, for department databases (indices).   
  3. Use encoding/grouping software, e.g., 3M Coding & Reimbursement System, Quantim, for classification and reimbursement.
  4. Identify data elements and values for retrieving health information from databases.   
  5. Prepare written reports according to department procedure.
