INT-1620 Security+ Preparation

This introduction to security systems gives students a solid foundation in different computer security concepts, functions, and applications. The course maps to the Computing Technology Industry Association’s (CompTIA) Security+ exam, which covers general security concepts, communication security, infrastructure security, basics of cryptography, and operations/organizational security. Upon completion of this course, students will be prepared to take CompTIA’s vendor-neutral Security+ exam. Security+ certification is globally recognized as equivalent to an entry-level security specialist and is accepted as one of the security certification exams by Microsoft toward its MCSA and MSCE certifications (CyberWatch common course equivalent: CW 160).
Prerequisite(s): Prerequisites INT-1010   and (INT-1450   or INT-1550  ).
2 class/2 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
  1. Identify threats to network services, devices traffic, and data.

  2. Indicate how internal systems and services can be hardened.

  3. Identify how inter-network devices and services can be hardened.

  4. Identify the features and techniques needed to secure network communication.

  5. Describe Cryptography fundamentals, including Symmetric and Asymmetric encryption/decryption, hashing, and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

  6. Recognize the role of certificates and certificate management.

  7. Identify the elements that make up an organizational security policy. Describe the measures needed to enforce it.

  8. Recognize how a security infrastructure is monitored.

  9. Identify the characteristics of various media.
